Excellent piece of equipment!
It took only half an hour to figure out the system and start recording our first DVD from a VHS cassette. Just hook-up a video signal via RCA cables, select the recording speed, and press record. There are simple steps for first formatting and last finalizing. Several sessions/movies can be recorded and arranged/deleted before finalizing. Here, also simple cutting into chapters is possible which then show on the main menu when inserting the DVD. Otherwise, it will just start to play the movie.
You still can't copy copy-protected media. If it's protected, you'll get garbage on your discs and you'll have wasted your time. That goes for Macrovision-encoded videotapes. Macrovision is the intentional distortion added to commercial videotapes so that you can't copy them; most recorders are designed to check for it.
So it is most useful to record something from a VHS tape that you have recorded or filmed, from a non-copyrighted DVD, or directly from TV as it plays. But in that it is remarkably simple and quite a good price.
